Incoming from Doves

By Stu - Posted on 26 March 2009

My intro to Doves began many years ago at my local library where The Last Broadcast was available for checkout.  This is actually quite the phenomenon because, at the time, the library's approximately 25 CD's that were loosely categorized as "Rock" contained the following discs: a Ricky Martin CD, a Creed CD, and a couple WOW: that's what I call music year in review CD's.  It was pretty bad, which makes it all the more surprising that this Doves CD was piled in amongst them.  [Kraig made an equally improbable discovery when he found Rhett Miller's The Instigator in the same "Rock" section, but that is another story].

After checking out and loving The Last Broadcast, I proceeded to get my grubby little hands on Some Cities and Lost Souls, which each now hold a special place in my heart.  I've been keeping my eyes and ears open since then, waiting to hear about any future Doves albums that I may snag and pet lovingly.  Finally I received some exciting news: Doves will be releasing their fourth studio album, Kingdom of Rust, on April 7, 2009!  Oh Joy!

I got my first taste of the new album in Jetstream (check it out over at Whale in a Cubicle), and I really did not like what I heard.  Something about that repetitive cymbal just wasn't working for me.  After my initial disheartening, I moved on and found some solid gold Doves' tracks.  Winter Hill I really dig; it has a wonderful light and airy sound, but don't let it fool you into thinking it doesn't rock.  House of Mirrors has a harder edge to it and features some nice riffs.  All in all, I'm fairly excited.  April 7th, mark it down, new Doves album!
